Alberta physician introduces FemiLift treatment for urinary incontinence
Anti-aging specialist, Dr. Lizette Lourens of Age Management Institute in Alberta, is the first physician in Western Canada to offer FemiLift, a fast, non-surgical treatment for women suffering with stress and urgency incontinence.
While women often joke about not being able to jump on a trampoline, urinary incontinence really isn’t a joke for those dealing with it. It can be debilitating and humiliating, inhibiting daily activity. Sneezing, coughing, running, exercising and even having a good laugh can lead to stress incontinence. And it affects 33% of women over the age of 40.
Sneezing, coughing, running, exercising and even having a good laugh can lead to stress incontinence. And it affects 33% of women over the age of 40.
‘So many women suffer from urinary incontinence due to childbirth, age, weight fluctuations, menopause and pelvic floor issues,’ explains Dr. Lizette Lourens, founder and owner of Age Management Institute in Calgary and Canmore. ‘Yet as common as the problem is, many women are still reluctant to speak about it with their doctor. They assume they simply have to tolerate it, with no easy solution available. FemiLift can solve the problem, sometimes with just one treatment.’ Lourens notes that the number of treatments can vary from one to four, depending upon the severity of the condition. In an effort to ensure FemiLift is available to more women, she is providing discounts for those requiring multiple visits to achieve optimal results.
FemiLift uses a fractional CO2 laser, long recognized as the gold standard of lasers for safe and effective face and skin rejuvenation. Alma Lasers sells the laser and single-use hygienic probes to administer the treatment. It takes approximately 15 minutes to complete and has minimal downtime. And the results last 18 months to more than two years, depending upon the individual’s health and lifestyle.
The probe is gently inserted into the vagina to deliver thermal energy into the tissue of the vaginal wall. It takes just minutes and is a virtually painless, non-surgical procedure that does not require anaesthesia. Women may return to their daily routine immediately, however it is recommended to refrain from having vaginal sexual intercourse and using tampons for approximately three days following treatment.
Childbirth, hormones, menopause, aging, weight fluctuations and some medications can impact the vagina and your sexual health.
In addition to treating stress and urgency incontinence, FemiLift can also be used for vaginal rejuvenation. Childbirth, hormones, menopause, aging, weight fluctuations and some medications can impact the vagina and your sexual health. ‘Patients may be uncomfortable talking about their incontinence issues with a doctor and many are even more reluctant to speak about their sex life. But a healthy sex life is part of healthy aging and I want to help my patients get back in the bedroom game,’ says Lourens.

As an anti-aging expert and bio-identical hormone specialist, Dr. Lourens strongly believes, ‘aging doesn’t have to be synonymous with degeneration and loss of vitality. There are so many ways we can improve our wellness; to age happily and healthily.’ Lourens notes that sexual wellbeing was recently identified as one of the leading spa and wellness trends for 2016 by SpaFinder. ‘It’s refreshing to see SpaFinder embracing the importance of sexual health and promoting an open dialogue for development in the spa and wellness world.’
FemiLift helps restore tightness to the vagina, increases natural lubrication and helps restore the body’s natural responses. ‘Aging impacts our body in so many ways, but people don’t really think about the natural process of aging down there,’ she adds. ‘Sex is good for us. It’s exercising those muscles, it gets your heart rate up and it’s good for your hormones, too. This treatment can make sex more comfortable and satisfying.’
